Heat given keys to Brisbane city after winning BBL crown

"I WONDER what getting the keys to the city entitles you to?"

Brisbane Heat players were pondering that very question this week as we received the prestigious award from Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

It wasn't the only silverware in our cupboard, as we brought the Big Bash League to a close with a trouncing of the Perth Scorchers.

Our grand final win not only reinforced our team as a major threat come the Champions League, but once again proved we are the 'come-from-behind' specialists.

The win was a monkey off our back, being our first Twenty20 title win since the format kicked off domestically seven years ago.

It is fair to say it was celebrated strongly post-game, kicking off in the dressing rooms at the WACA.

We invited a number of Brisbane Heat season members into our rooms to join us, most of them having made the trip from Brisbane just for the game.

In previous weeks I have discussed the notion of us playing with our 'kahunas'.

Well, the same goes for two of our season members.

A father-son duo made the trip from Brisbane, without tickets, but with $1000 and an eye out for scalpers. That's commitment to the team.

Fortunately the duo came across Channel 9 reporter Aislin O'Connor (who also made the trip to cover our story) who helped them with ticketing to the sold-out match.

Great Queensland spirit all-round.

The game wasn't without its share of humour either.

The West Australian crowd can be quite vicious at the best of times, but there was clearly something more in the air on Saturday night where Nathan Hauritz gave back as good as he got.

I don't think I'll ever forget the sound of 20,000 people jacked up on adrenalin, chanting "Haury's a w****r".

To his credit, Nathan produced a man-of-the-match performance in between his taunting of the crowd, and he loved every minute of it. We all did.

The frivolities extended to the dressing rooms post game, where twitter personality 'Lars Bishop' raided our party to come face-to-face with his two idols, 'Coach Lehmon' and 'Mr Christiansen'.

Plenty of laughter ensued as he made his way around the room in true Bishop style.

To the players and support staff, the BBL Bash win wasn't just something we had scrapped and fought hard for during the course of the competition, it was a stepping stone - one that involves premiership wins for all three formats of the summer game.

We now turn our focus back to the Ryobi Cup and Sheffield Shield fixtures.

Once we add those to our mantelpiece, maybe then we can lock them away with those 'special' keys.
