NSW Planning and Infrastructure have issued a timely reminder to councils and businesses to be aware of risks from awning collapses.

This follows an awning falling from Santai Resort in Casuarina earlier this month, which luckily did not injure anyone.

However, several parked cars were damaged as a result of the accident which was listed as a structural fault.

Department of Planning Director-General Sam Haddad said they were sending out advice which would let councils and businesses know steps they could take to ensure awnings were safe.

"The circular reminds councils of their powers and owners of their responsibilities with regard to awning safety. It arises out of the coronial recommendations and follows extensive consultation with the Division of Local Government in the Department of Premier and Cabinet."

Mr Haddad said the Deputy Coroner gave recommendations on informing business and councils about their responsibilities after a man was killed during a collapse in 2010.

"The Deputy Coroner noted there had been 17 reported incidents involving awning collapses throughout NSW since 1998, when a fatal accident resulted from an awning collapse at Bathurst," he said.

Recommendations included regular inspections and reminding building owners about their responsibility in ensuring awnings were built under proper construction standards.

The weight of bird droppings and structural weakening due to age are both primary concerns for the stability of awnings and the safety of the public.
