High-speed pursuit driver in court

A LISMORE man who allegedly stole a vehicle from a car dealer at Southport in Queensland and led police on a pursuit on the Bruxner Highway will reappear in court next month.

Casino Highway Patrol arrested and charged the 54-year-old on the evening of Friday December 21 after a pursuit which ended at Clovass near Casino.

Police allege that while the man was at the car dealership he got into an unlocked Holden Astra, turned the keys that were in the ignition and drove off.

The stolen car first came to the attention of Casino Highway Patrol officers at 8.40pm when it sped past them at Clovass on the Bruxner Highway travelling west.

After the Astra continued at speed and overtook two west bound vehicles police caught up to the car and activated the lights and sirens but the driver still refused to stop.

A police pursuit was initiated and finally ended when the Holden turned into a dead end street.

The driver was arrested and taken to Casino Hospital where a urine sample was obtained.

He was then taken to Casino Police Station where he was charged with receiving and possessing property stolen outside NSW, not stopping for police, driving dangerously, exceeding the speed limit over 20km/h, exceed speed limit over 45km/h, driving while disqualified, driving recklessly/furiously in a manner dangerous and at dangerous speeds.

After initially being refused bail the man appeared at Lismore Local Court on Saturday, December 22, where he was granted conditional bail to reappear at Casino Local Court on January 9.
