Holidays traffic well behaved but work still needed

OPERATION Safe Arrival is full speed ahead and the Tweed might be down on fatalities this year but our yearly average is up.

Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Bill Darnell said this year there had been no fatalities in the holiday period whereas last year we'd already had death one on Christmas day and another on New Years Eve.

"This year to date (December 26) we are one fatal less," he said.

"But injuries, crashes and persons injured are trending up.

"We've had no shining examples of stupid speed, which I'm happy to say is good."

Although fatalities are down over the period it's a different story when you look at the whole year.

Since the start of the year we've seen 10 people lose their lives on our roads.

We only lost six at this time last year and our three year average is nine people.

Snr Sgt Darnell said everyone needed to drive to the conditions and slow down to keep the road toll at bay.

Since December 21 four people have been charged with failing to wear seat belts, 23 have been charged with speeding and three people have been charged with drink driving out of 639 breath tests conducted.

A total of 64 people have been issued with traffic infringement notices and a further 16 have been handed a court date of other traffic charges.
