INVESTIGATORS from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau were expected to arrived last night on the scene of a fatal light aircraft crash containing the bodies of two men that occurred at South Gundurimba yesterday morning.

A team of two investigators boarded a plane yesterday afternoon, and another team of two investigators were due to land in Lismore this morning.

The bodies of the two men killed in the training flight, that took off from the Gold Coast airport at 8.30am, remained in the Socata Trinidad aircraft yesterday until Australia Transport Safety Bureau ATSB investigators examined the wreckage.

An ATSB spokesman said the investigators will look at all aspects of the crash including the flight path, radio transmissions, weather conditions and the wreckage to try to determine the cause of the crash.

"After liaising with police investigators will go to the accident site and their first priority is to secure perishable evidence," he said.

"This might include the pattern of wreckage and any marks on the ground from the impact, things that can change fairly easily and quickly."

"Our investigators want to build as detailed a picture as we can to try to determine what happened."

The spokesman said investigators will also examine wreckage, interview witnesses of the crash, examine the planes records including its maintenance records.

"We want to build as detailed picture as we can because generally it's a combination of factors that contribute to the accident."

"The idea for the ATSB is to get as useful a safety message as possible about the accident to avoid it happening again."

Anyone with any information on the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
