Jockey betting practice rife: report

THERE are reports as many as 10 top-flight jockeys could face sanctions for using third parties to bet on races.

The News Limited report quoted an unnamed jockey who said the practice of jockeys using professional punters to get bets on was rife.

It comes as one of Australia's leading hoops Damien Oliver prepared to front a stewards' inquiry on Tuesday after admitting he bet on a rival horse in 2010.

Mr Oliver, who rode three group one winners during Melbourne's spring carnival despite facing the allegations, formally admitted to placing a $10,000 bet on a horse called Miss Octopussy at Moonee Valley.

The two-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey was on the second favourite in the race, Europa Point, which ran sixth.

News Limited reported Mr Oliver used a professional punter to place the bet. The same punter has been threatened with a lengthy ban from the track unless he co-operates with racing authorities, the report revealed.

Racing Victoria chief executive Rob Hines this week denied the state's peak body had waited until after the carnival to charge Mr Oliver with illegal betting.

It comes as the Herald Sun reported this week Victorian police were looking at a prominent crime figure in relation to the murder of horse trainer Les Samba in February last year.

The investigation of Mr Samba's murder has raised allegations of race fixing, involving his former son-in-law, jockey Danny Nikolic, and other high profile riders.
