AFTER the holiday crowd leaves Kingscliff work will begin to upgrade Marine Pde.

The $600,000 upgrade, from Turock St to Seaview St, includes turning Marine Pde into a one-way street and will create 50 additional car parks.

Tweed Shire Council director of engineering Patrick Knight said work was scheduled to begin on February 6-7 with the removal of existing line marking and painting of new line marking to designate new one-way traffic conditions for that section of Marine Parade.

"Barriers will be erected and signs will be installed on adjacent roads to clearly show traffic flow will be south-bound only along Marine Pde, from Turnock St to Seaview Rd," Mr Knight said.

"Construction works will then begin on Monday 11 February and are expected to take 10 to 12 weeks, given favourable weather conditions.

"Road works will be conducted in several stages, starting from the northern end, to minimise the impact on businesses along the street, their customers and other residents and visitors."

Mr Knight said the council's streetscape design for that portion of Marine Pde could not be completed until the hotel redevelopment design had been finalised.

"The upgrade of Marine Pde will be an important step in creating a safer and more attractive community hub for Kingscliff," he said.

"It comes in response to long-standing resident and business demands for more parking in the town's central business district and to slow traffic along that section of the foreshore."

The plan was approved after extensive public consultation.
