THE Northern Rivers will today join the digital age with analogue television signals to be turned off.

Only digital television signals will be transmitted allowing viewers to experience improved reception of more channels in a wide screen format.

Good Guys department manager Ben Fairbank said the store had experienced an increase in sales of digital televisions and set top boxes over the weekend, however Good Guys South Tweed still had plenty in stock for people who hadn't realised the switch over was about to happen.

"We've had a noticeable increase in the number of customers who wanted to buy a new digital television or set top box as well as a rise in the number of people who need us to do the installation.

"We can take care of the entire process; deliver, install, take away the old equipment and show people how to use their new TV or set top box.

"We have a fully qualified technician standing by and costs depend on the kind of work necessary and the location," Mr Fairbank said.

Digital television is meant to give viewers DVD quality pictures, CD quality sound and a widescreen format.

It also offers an increased number of channels and interactive features such as a digital guide and weather updates.

On top of the traditional channels, Freeview digital television provides viewers with an extra 10 channels, all of which are free of charge.

Digital-only television was first introduced country-wide in Luxembourg in 2006 and digital signals were first broadcast in Australian metropolitan areas in 2001.

As most overseas programs are recorded in digital format, a large number of countries are making the switch.

Some opt to change in stages as in Australia and others have chosen to switch the entire country in one go.

If you have not made the switch and are uncertain how to proceed, visit the Australian government's switch over website at digitalready.gov.au.
