Lifeguards will be out in force this summer holidays

TWEED lifeguards are urging families to be safe and head to patrolled beaches these holidays.

Duranbah/Flagstaff, Fingal Rovers, Cudgen Headland, Casuarina, Cabarita, Hastings Point, Pottsville North and Pottsville South will all be patrolled by Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) lifeguards until the end of January.

"During the summer period many residents and holiday makers will be taking advantage of the great weather and heading to the beach but it's important they don't lose sight of surf safety," Lifeguard Operations Manager, Matt Rodwell said.

"The best way for people to stay safe on the beach this summer is to swim only at patrolled beaches, between the red and yellow flags.

"Some people don't realise that the flagged areas of the beach are not only patrolled by trained lifeguards and lifesavers, they have also been identified as the safest places to swim.

"And always remember - if we can't see you, we can't save you."

Northern Lifeguard Coordinator, Scott McCartney said he encouraged people to make the most of their time on the beach this summer, but urges them to put safety first while they enjoy the surf.

"We strongly encourage swimmers to follow all safety warnings and avoid entering the water unless there is an active patrol on duty, which will be signified by the red and yellow flags," he said.

"If you are ever unsure about the conditions, have a chat to one of the lifeguards or lifesavers on duty before entering the water and always try to swim with a friend where possible."
