GOLD Coast-based photographer Shelli Bankier is releasing her first photographic book, titled BlueSphere, a collection of Shelli's original and unique surf and ocean images.

Bankier has been taking photos of the surf and ocean with artistic flair for 10 years now and is one of the few women to do so.

Shelli's first book is a collection of her work from Australia, Hawaii, Tahiti and more.

"My major work is an artistic viewpoint of the beauty of the breaking wave," said Shelli, who has taken a subliminal personal approach to her subject rather than a full-blown pro-commercial expose.

Shelli suffered a severe spinal injury at 16 in a car accident, which meant learning how to walk and surf again after the doctors told her that both were a remote possibility.

Before the accident, Shelli grew up on a yacht sailing around the world, thereby falling in love with the ocean.

She started surfing at 13 years of age.

It's those early experiences and mishaps that have created Bankier's eye for detail and appreciation of the ocean.

"Photography of the waves was a natural progression to connect to the ocean and share this connection," she said.

Shelli, now 31, is walking and surfing although points out that she is no surf pro! "I just love being out there and riding what I can!"

The BlueSphere book is an inspirational illustration for awareness of the ocean, its importance and beauty.

Bankier's personal story is an can be tied to this as inspiration for anyone that vision and hard work can get you through to where you want to be!

Shelli's work has been widely published and exhibited over recent years, including the SurfWorld museum her own studio, Inverse Gallery when it was at Burleigh.

This unique book represents the highlights of Shelli's work and is a perfect gift for Christmas or the coffee table collection.

You can catch up with Shelli at the first launch of BlueSphere at Rabbit & Cocoon studio, 23 Hillcrest Ave, Miami from 5-9pm on Thursday, December 6.TWEED Coast's Chelsea Williams came so agonizingly close to winning the World Women's Professional Longboard title at Hainan Island, China finishing runner-up to Hawaii's Kelia Moniz in the Swatch Girls China Pro.

Last year Chelsea won the final from Moniz and, despite a sensational high-scoring semi. failed to repeat that form in the final against the greatly improved Keila, who is from a famous Hawaiian surfing family. It was Kelia's maiden World title.

Hawaii was in full celebration mode when Kauai's Sebastian Zietz won the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa against North Shore's John John Florence and Fred Pattachia. "Seabass" now leads the Hawaiian Triple Crown and has qualified for next year's ASP World Tour.Eleven-time World Champion Kelly Slater was surprisingly eliminated in the round of 32.
