ALSTONVILLE'S Beatrix Walsh is now a "true blue" Aussie.

Born in Austria, she spent 11 years in England and has lived in Australia for the past 52 years.

She's a fan of Vegemite and spent years as a banana and avocado farmer, complete with an outback dunny in the bush across the road.

But there was one important Aussie tradition she hadn't tried: backyard cricket.

That all changed last week when the 82-year-old was on her daily walk and noticed the neighbours had started playing cricket in the street.

"I was just walking past, and one of the girls shouted out that they needed some extra fielders," Mrs Walsh said.

"So, silly me, I decided to have a go.

"It was so funny - it was really the best thing.

"They gave me the bat.

"I actually did hit the ball, but God knows where it went after that.

"I am probably too old to be playing cricket, but I really enjoyed myself, and the best part is that I made some lovely new friends.

"I have no idea how I have got through all these years here in Australia without playing cricket before."

Neighbours and cricket game organisers Tammy Short and Karen Watson said it was a "special moment".

"It was just so lovely," Ms Short said.

"When we saw her walking past, I could just tell that Beatrix wanted to play.

"So I called her over and she was so excited."

But it was a short-lived cricket career for Mrs Walsh, who says she has no plans to pick up the bat again any time soon.
