THE Tweed community will have the opportunity to join the Cancer Council's annual Relay for Life event next March and contribute to its work in seeking a cure and raising awareness.

The Tweed Cancer Council launched this year's Relay for Life event on Sunday and Tweed deputy mayor Michael Armstrong attended the event held at South Tweed Sports Club.

"The Relay for Life is an important community event.

"It raises much needed funds to assist the cancer council in its work.

"The importance of the work of the Cancer Council to the local community cannot be overstated and events like the Relay for Life allow the community an important opportunity to provide the cancer council support financially as well as showing our appreciation for the contribution they make to our community

"Events like Relay for Life only occur through the dedication and hard work of the organisers and their committee," Mr Armstrong said.

The Tweed's Relay to Life will take place on March 23 and 24 of next year and will be an overnight community event where teams of 10 to 15 members participate in a relay style walk or run.

Relay for Life organiser Rhian Paton-Kelly said "the event brings the entire community together for a night of fun, entertainment, celebration and remembrance.

"We're really looking forward to bringing Tweed Valley 2013 Relay for Life to its new home at the Cudgen League's Club.

"We encourage those who are thinking about celebrating with us in March 2013 to register early.

"This will ensure that they start to receive the teams' newsletters and can be invited to any pre-event," Ms Paton-Kelly said.
