AN 83-year-old archer from Ballina has continued her impressive run at the Pan Pacific Masters Games on the Gold Coast.

Maureen Taylor won two gold medals in field and target archery in the over-70 division on Sunday and has now competed at all eight Masters Games on the Gold Coast since 1998.

"I really enjoy it and there was a lot of fuss about me being the oldest archer there," Taylor said. "Archery is the sort of thing that you either fall in love with and it doesn't let you go or it doesn't do anything for you.

"I like to think of it as a healthy addiction.

"I have no intention of stopping anytime soon and it's something I really enjoy."

Taylor was a founding member of the Ballina Archery Club with her mother and two sisters in 1969. Two other club members also returned with medals with Debbie O'Brien winning two gold in field and target in the 30-49 category.

Vinnie Bleakley, 30, competed in his first Masters Games on the Gold Coast and walked away with a silver medal from the target archery in the men's 30-49 category.

Taylor has been involved for 44 years and will celebrate her 84th birthday in January.

She said it's hard to pinpoint a reason why people decide to take on archery as a sport.

"I have no idea why people take it up, it could be a Robin Hood thing or have something to do with the Hunger Games movie," Taylor said.

"A lot of people don't last though and it's a shame.

"It's a good thing for older people to get into after they retire."

The club has 22 members and is limited to how many members they can take.
