A SIMPLE Facebook message to thank a Kingscliff police officer went viral last week.

Pottsville Beach Public School parent Jen Barnes made the kind gesture 10 days ago on the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Facebook page.

Since then the internet has embraced the message with the post receiving more than 11,390 likes, 288 comments and more than 150 shares.

"Highlight of the school excursion today to Hastings Point was when the kids were leaving the beach to walk back to school," she wrote.

"A policeman driving past saw that 120 6-7 year olds were about to cross the road.

"He stopped..turned on his flashing lights, stopped all the traffic and hi 5'ed(sic) all the kids as they walked past him.

"Very very cool :) Well done to that police officer!!!"

The Tweed/Byron LAC page has only 1,927 likes so the attention this post received by social commentators is immense.

A modest Senior Constable Tony Atkins said he was just doing his job when he helped the students cross the road.

"Any of the boys would have done it," he said.

"I am a bit humbled by it all.

"Police don't usually get that amount of recognition so it was nice."

Snr Con Atkins sat down and replied to all of the positive comments with a thank-you message to show how much he appreciated their support.

He said it was important for children to trust and believe in the police.

"The cops aren't about taking people away," he said.

"It's nice for them to be able to see that we're normal."

Mrs Barnes said promoting Snr Cons Atkins' work showed a positive side of the police.

"I've never really seen police go out of their way," she said.

"And he was great, he stopped the traffic and you could just see he loved what he did.

"He knew he was making all of the kid's days too."

Mrs Barnes' seven-year-old daughter Jamelia did not stop talking about her encounter with the man in blue for the entire afternoon.

"He did a great job," she said.

"He did not have to stop but he did."

The primary school mother said she could not believe how much attention the post had received.

"I like to thank people when they go above and beyond," she said.

"And he did just that."

Snr Con Atkins said the Tweed/Byron LAC Facebook page was a great forum for feedback but also highlighted awareness in the area.
