STAFF at Tweed River Regional Museum has nearly completed documenting, packing and moving the entire collection to a new purpose-built permanent storage facility so construction at Queensland Rd can begin.

Only a few very heavy items are left and will be moved then work on the museum extension can start.

A large retaining wall at the rear of the property is already in place and the area between the old museum building and the retaining wall has been cleared.

Museum director Judy Kean said the extension would provide a lot more space to exhibit the collection and allow the museum to welcome a significantly increased number of visitors.

"There will still be space for a research centre for the Murwillumbah Historical Society as well as room for museum admin staff.

"The old museum building will remain predominantly the same and maintain its functions however the reception area will be changed.

"Visitors will be able to access the new extension via a connecting passage featuring a glass ceiling and view the collection in the new display area," Ms Kean said.

The museum would try to accommodate touring exhibitions if space allowed and was looking to expand its collection.

One of the future displays under consideration is an exhibition of five top Tweed stories to be shared with the community.

Museum staff is calling for residents to come forward and tell them what stories should be featured in the museum.

Construction of the extension and renovation of the old council building are set to start soon and the museum will remain closed for most of 2013.

However, Tweed River Regional Museum in Tweed Heads will remain open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11.00 am until 4.00 pm.

The Uki and South Arm Historical Society is also open for public enquiries each Friday from 9.30 am until 12.30 pm.

Updates and information will be available at council's website at tweed.nsw.gov.au/museum.
