THE Family First Party will be announcing its federal candidate today at a flood appeal barbecue.

Russell Kilarney is the only party member seeking preselection for the seat of Richmond. He will join the party executive for a barbecue at Knox Park, in his hometown of Murwillumbah.

Today, Family First will officially open its Tweed branch, promote its candidate and will also donate the proceeds of the barbecue to victims of the Bundaberg flood.

Mr Kilarney said he was looking forward to promoting the party and its policies over the coming months.

"I've put my forms in and applied with Family First as a lower house candidate," he said.

"Ultimately it's up to the national executive whether I run for upper or lower house.

He said the party would do things differently to the major parties.

"To be honest I don't care about politics, I don't like it. I care about policies and people," he said.

Mr Kilarney was optimistic about the future of his party and believed it could make a difference in the Tweed region.

"This region means a lot to me.To see it going downhill with so many empty shops, business struggling, people moving away - it's heartbreaking," he said.

"Farmers are disgruntled with the major parties, so we're starting to pick up a lot of farmers that are concerned for their future."

But Mr Kilarney said not only farmers were signing up as members with Family First.

"There's a huge number of people wanting to sign up already," he said.

"It's growing very rapidly within Northern NSW."

He said Family First opposed CSG operations, and other key issues included providing strong support to agricultural industries and revoking the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"We'd like to bring a balance back to politics between the environment and the people," he said.

The donation barbecue will start at 11.30am tomorrow and candidates will be announced at 12.30pm.
