SURFER Nathan Hedge from the Gold Coast has taken a win at the Carlton Dry Expression Session.

Runner-up Asher Wales was beaten at his own surf break, Duranbah Beach, by Hedge's masterful manoeuvres on Tuesday.

The 45 minute expression session differs from traditional surfing competition, rewarding radical boardriding and surfing with personality.

Hedge said he was happy he surfed well on the day and was looking forward to the Quiksilver Pro.

"I'm wrapped, it's a great opportunity to come and surf in the Carlton Dry Expression Session," he said.

"And now I'm invited to the event (Quiksilver Pro) to enjoy the show and be part of it. I'm pretty lucky."

10 talented surfers took part in the session, including local wildcards Brent Dorrington and Jack Freestone.

Sizeable waves provided some solid action on the day thanks to wild conditions whipped up by a tropical low off the coast.

Hedge will now compete in the Quiksilver Pro expression session and will also compete in the surf competition's trials at Snapper Rocks

Judges included Quiksilver Hawaii team manager Bill Pierce, former world champ Wayne Deane and Surfing Queensland judges Jimi Deane and Stace Gailbraith.
