Nationals candidate calls on Elliot to resign from Labor

A CANDIDATE for September's federal election has challenged Richmond MP Justine Elliot on her stance on coal seam gas.

The National Party candidate for seat of Richmond, Matthew Fraser, has called on Mrs Elliot to resign from the Labor Party.

He said Mrs Elliot's opposition to coal seam gas mining was a stunt and called on her to 'put her money where her mouth is'.

"Mrs Elliot's recent statements are extremely hypocritical as she's trying to make people believe she can actually make a difference.

"Once she joins her colleagues in the Labor Party's caucus room, she'll have to toe the party line and support Labor policy.

"Tony Burke and his federal Labor Party colleagues are clearly committed to forging ahead with these 110 new CSG mines.

"Mrs Elliot's sudden standpoint is a stunt, plain and simple, and will not contribute one iota to reversing Labor's plans to open up NSW - and in turn the Richmond electorate - to CSG mining."

Mrs Elliot focused on The Nationals stance on CSG in response to Mr Fraser's demand for her resignation.

"Such ridiculous statements by Mr Fraser shows he just isn't up to the job of being a candidate," Mrs Elliot said.

"If he wants to do something positive then he should put pressure his own State National Party MPs who are behind the expansion of CSG mining across the North Coast."

On March 15, 2012 in the upper house of the NSW Parliament, the Labor Party voted to support a moratorium on CSG mining across NSW.

Did Justine Elliot do the right thing resigning from her role as parliamentary secretary for trade?
