Nation’s number one celebrant shocked at win

ON THE most romantic day of the year, Hervey Bay's Cheryl Kidd has been named Australia's best wedding celebrant.

Cheryl was shocked, amazed and bemused when she heard the news that she had been named the number one wedding celebrant in the nation.

The announcement was made on Valentine's Day, with Cheryl winning the Designer of Dreams competition, which is held annually by the Australian Bridal Industry Association.

Before Cheryl became a celebrant, she managed resorts and would preside over organising weddings for couples who came to get married at the locations.

She would always wish she was the one carrying out the ceremonies that made couples husband and wife.

Ten years ago, that dream became a reality and since then she has had some interesting experiences, including marrying couples as they ride into the ceremony on the back of a horse, along with Western-themed weddings.

She married one couple in a tree at the botanic gardens and married another couple who were dressed as Batman and Robin.

"It's been good and it gets better all the time," Cheryl said.

"I have so much fun with my couples."

She said one of the nicest parts of being a celebrant was that she stayed friends with the couples.

But the excitement of hearing she had been named number one celebrant was almost too much for her.

"I don't think I can handle it," she said through laughter.

Along with Cheryl's accomplishment, Urangan's Waterfront Restaurant also finished third in the competition, where it was entered in the Restaurant Reception category.

Cheryl said it was wonderful to see two Fraser Coast entrants do so well.
