THE annual charity motorcycle toy fun in aid of the 2LM Children's Christmas Appeal will have a change next year.

The North Coast Charity Motorcycle Toy Run, which last Sunday roared from Ballina to Lismore with 315 motorcycles taking part, will next year be called the Northern Rivers Charity Motorcycle Toy Run.

It seems like a simple change, but organiser Ron Gaudron, vice-president of the Northern Rivers branch of the Ulysses motorcycle club, said the new name would localise the event.

He said the North Coast toy run was "in the top 10" of the first toy runs to be held in Australia. It began with 25 bikes in 1981.

Now, motorcycle toy runs were popular throughout Australia, and the local event didn't want to confuse itself with others on the North Coast, Mr Gaudron said.

"The Northern Rivers is really from Grafton to the border," he said.

But the spirit of giving, and the spectacular sight of hundreds of bikes riding in formation with toys, won't change. The children's appeal supports children's charities in the region.
