JOHN Flynn Hospital took another leap forward as a major cardiac hospital after performing a procedure that was a first for Australian private hospitals.

The "valve on a stick" cardiac procedure eliminated the need for sutures. which reduces time spent under the knife.

Doctor Ben Anderson performed a new aortic valve replacement procedure, using the Perceval sutureless valve.

"The first recipient of the Perceval valve, an 85-year-old lady who needed to have a hip replacement, would previously have been too ill to have her hip surgery" said Dr Anderson.

"Fortunately for the patient, now having had the aortic valve replacement, she is doing extremely well and looking forward to having her hip replacement in the near future."

Dr Anderson initially trained for this procedure in New Zealand and then at the Royal Melbourne before returning to the private hospital in Tugun.
