IF only all crimes where as easy to solve as the case of the theft of three smart phones from cars parked at the South Tweed indoor pool.

On Wednesday morning five cars had their windows smashed and their contents stolen while parked outside the South Tweed indoor pool.

Tweed-Byron Inspector Jim Kain said an iPad 2, a Samsung smart phone, two iPhones, a GPS system and cash was stolen from the vehicles.

The items were reported as stolen and police investigated the scene.

One of the victims went home and contacted police to tell them she'd managed to track her iPhone using the free Find my iPhone software.

"Police attended a Megan St Address," Insp Kain said.

"Police recovered two apple iPhones matching the description provided to police.

"Police spoke to a number of occupants at the house and inquires are continuing."

Insp Kain said the tracking software had helped police in the past.

"It all helps doesn't it?" he said.

The victims will have their phones returned after a forensic examination has been conducted.

In a statement released by police they encouraged owners of Android or Apple smart phones and tablets to activate and install free tracking software.

"If your property is stolen, and tracking information is available please make the police your first call," the statement said.

"Let them knock on the door."
