Old age and treachery win the day shooting

THE ANNUAL "Trivial Cup" off-rifle team competition was fired over the 500 yard distance on Saturday afternoon.

This match between the club's F-Class contingent [F-Troop] and the traditional Target Rifle crew, (derisively named "Dad's Army" - no doubt in recognition of their many years of accumulated wisdom and experience) requires that the match will be shot with all competitors decked out in F-Class get-up and under F-Class rules.

No wonder F-Troop were confident.

But not wanting to be outdone, the wise heads in the Dad's Army mob quietly began preparing for the clash.

Nothing happens too fast in this camp, but with a few time-proven tricks up their sleeve, old age and treachery in the end turned out to be much more of a match for youth, enthusiasm and over-confidence.

A deceptive wind kept competitors on their toes for most of the day, before Dad's Army strolled away with a two point win.

Top off-rifle score was posted by Nick Abrahall using his guardian angel rig [Dad's Army] with John Black [F-Troop] just one point off the pace. Under daily aggregate rules - which didn't apply on the day - there was a remarkable four way count out for the top spot.

John Bloomer was named winner after counting out Matt Bloomer, ahead of Ian Griffiths and Nick Abrahall, all with a one point break of handicap.

This year, with the match falling right in the middle of the pre-Christmas rush and an important wedding anniversary celebration being on the same day, numbers were down, but the usual rivalry was still very evident.

Next week, some sanity returns for those who can manage a leave pass, with another intriguing encounter with the elements, taking place probably from the 300 yard mound.

The range is located at 434 Trenayr Rd, opposite the Koppers log mill and adjacent to the Experiment Farm. Full bore shooting from 1pm. Visitors and new members welcome.
