Phil Hughes excited for one-day debut against Sri Lanka

PHIL Hughes has worked his way back into the Australian Test side and now he is looking to seal a permanent place in the one-day outfit.

The 24-year-old New South Welshman, who made the switch to South Australia this season, is set for his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on Friday and is looking to grab the opportunity with both hands after working hard on his game over the past year.

Hughes had a successful stint in England with county side Worcestershire in the Australian winter and has also worked hard at his game since returning from the UK.

He also shined for South Australia in both Sheffield Shield and the Ryobi Cup earlier in the domestic season and says he enjoys playing all three forms of the game and his target is to do the same for his country.

"I want to be the complete batsman," he said.

"There's still work I have to do.

"I have played a fair bit of Test cricket but never in this format and that's why I am rapt to get this chance.

"At times it can be tough to adapt to different formats but the more you play the easier it is to adapt.

"That's something I have always taken into my preparation as well.

"I really love all formats but now hopefully after being given this opportunity I can stamp my authority in this one."

Hughes is not sure where he will bat in the series opener at the MCG but says he doesn't mind and is just happy to be given an opportunity and will take the attack to the Sri Lankans wherever he bats.

"There's work that I have to do," he said, but I feel like I am quite comfortable with my one-day game now.

"I am really grateful for this opportunity, so hopefully I can make the most of it.

"It's a format that you really have to attack and that's my natural game.

"Instincts take over and I really like to get on the front foot and take the game forward.

"I feel like I have worked on a number of shots, especially through the leg side over the last six to 12 months.

"So Hopefully I can take that into this series."
