Traffic police focusing on drug drivers have picked up 35 people for the offence in a 10-day operation.

POLICE are investigating reports of card skimming at a Byron Bay St George Bank automatic teller machine.

The victim, who reported the incident to police on Wednesday believes money has been stolen from his account from four different locations after he used the Jonson St St George Bank ATM, Acting Inspector Leanne Edmonds from Tweed-Byron police said.

Police were investigating a number of leads.

A St George Bank spokeswoman said they detected attempts at fraudulent transactions on some customers' cards who had used their Byron ATM on Sunday night.

As a result, they immediately blocked those cards and as a precautionary measure, also those cards of customers who had used the ATM during the period it was likely the skimming was occurring.

She said these customers had been notified and they were in the process of issuing them with replacement cards.

"We have checked the ATM and it is safe to use, however, customers should always be cautious for possible attempts at skimming and protect their card," the spokeswoman said.

She said unauthorised transactions would be covered by the bank and affected customers should contact St.George immediately on 13 33 30.

To guard against ATM card skimming customers are advised to check the card slot and cover the panel when you enter your pin in case it is being photographed as well as choose difficult to guess PINS and passwords.
