AUSTRALIA Day celebrations in Byron Bay would not be the same without the Paddle from Wategos to Main Beach with family and friends.

Starting at 10am on January 26, the Paddle is part of a fun-filled day which raises money for local charities.

Registrations will be taken on the day at Wategos Beach from 8-9.30am for seven divisions, starting with Nippers and various surfboard lengths, as well as stand-up boards, racing skis and kayaks.

Event co-organiser George Alpen said more than 1200 paddlers had crossed the Bay on Australia Day since the event started in 2009.

"Registration is only $10 and all money raised goes to local charities," George said.

"We have given away $35,000 to organisations including Byron Bay Hospital, the Uncle Foundation, Disabled Surfers, Salvation Army and Katia Nursery.

"The Byron Bay SLSC has been instrumental in providing the water safety for the Paddle and the use of the deck where there is a barbecue and refreshments afterwards."

The event is supported by the Beach Hotel, Byron Bay Property Sales, Danny Wills & Quiksilver, In The Pink Ice Cream, Maddog Surf Centre, Amore Coffee, Style Surfing School, Coopers, PMD Screen Prints and Electric Sunnies.
