TWEED Heads wharves were quietening down as the very last of the fresh caught prawns sold for $55kg.

Trawlers were out of the Aussie Christmas staple and Outlaw Seafoods Australia fisherman Eddie Kurz and John Smith were supplying the only fresh prawns today.

With demand for seafood so high this Christmas, only king prawns were available and they were selling for $55 a kilo.

John Smith said that the line for prawns was "50 yards long" on Sunday afternoon, and the wharves were chaotic most of the weekend.

Mr Smith said that it was like this every year and he wasn't surprised prawns were in short supply.

Eddie Kurz said he had a very busy weekend and was looking forward to putting his feet up tomorrow.

"It's been pretty hectic this weekend. We were completely out of product," he said.

"The rest won't last long either."

Mr Kurz hoped people enjoyed the prawns available despite the lack of options.

"It's good to be able to supply fresh local product to the locals," he said.

Fisherman have started packing up to head home for a relaxed Christmas, with their boats a lot lighter and their pockets a little heavier.
