NEW Year's Eve fireworks at the Lismore Showground scared a family dog in Avondale St so much the panicked pooch fled into hiding.

And owner Julie Baker sheds tears at the thought that her beloved family pet may never return.

Ms Baker has appealed to the public to help bring the family dog home and appease the heartache felt by herself, her two daughters and her partner.

The staffordshire-bull terrier cross goes by the name of Ruby and wears a collar with her name in diamond letters - a Christmas present from last year.

The friendly canine has all her family's details on the collar but does not have a microchip, a fact that now worries Ms Baker.

Ruby came to the family as a newly weaned puppy seven years ago and filled the house with joy. The family adored her happy attitude and her bustling en-ergy.

"She's so friendly," said Julie. "She just loves every- one."

The family was out on New Year's Eve and the sound of booming fireworks across the city apparently scared the white-coated cross and it bolted over the fence and out of the yard, making a brief appearance at a friend's New Year's Eve barbecue around the corner.

There she was seen looking obviously distressed but soon after she disappeared.

Despite an appeal to city vets and the council ranger there has been no news of the missing dog and now Ms Baker is starting to despair.

If anyone has any information about Ruby, who has a short white coat and distinctive dark spots around her mouth and belly, please phone Julie on 0431 620 296 or contact the Northern Star on 02 6620 0500.
