Remains of missing girl found inside croc

NORTHERN Territory police believe they have found the remains of a missing girl in the stomach of a 3m-long crocodile, shot dead at a remote waterhole.

Late Friday, a seven-year-old girl disappeared while swimming with family at the Gumarrirngbang Outstation, about 350km east of Darwin.

Witnesses told police they saw a large crocodile attack a man before dragging the girl under water.

Officers found and shot the reptile on Saturday and an autopsy revealed what was believed to be human remains in its stomach.

Extra police were flown in from remote Aboriginal communities to help with the search.Senior Sergeant Shaun Gill said the result was a "heartbreaking outcome for the family and the community".

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
