Residents in line for Australia Day gongs

AS AUSTRALIA Day gets closer the list of Richmond Valley residents who have been nominated for this year's Australia Day Awards has been released.

There are 10 nominations for the different categories.

Nominations for Citizen of the Year include: Agnes Tierney; Bev Byers; Shirley Wheatley; and Melva Thompson.

Sports Person of the Year will be decided between Luke Jones and Kennith Whitton and Alice Warner was nominated for Youth of the Year.

The Casino RSM Youth Club was nominated for the Sporting Team of the Year Award and the Community Event of the Year will be between the Evans Head Malibu Classic and Beef Meets Reef @ Evans Head.

All nominees made a wonderful contribution to the Richmond Valley, according to council general manager John Walker.

Mr Walker said because of people like those nominated for awards, the Valley was a better and more rewarding place for everyone to live in.

Australia Day at Evans Head will start with a fun mini-triathlon, a sausage sizzle and bush poetry.

The official ceremony celebrating the Citizens Awards is at 10am and this is when the winners of the awards will be announced.

This will be followed by an afternoon of entertainment from Luke Vassella, Gary Fogarty and some local dance groups.

Markets, camel rides, face painting, chalk art and whip cracking will be taking place all day, with a post-lunch touch football match, volleyball and cricket on the beach, novelty races and kite flying also on offer for Australia Day revellers to enjoy.

Program

All day - Richmond Valley Radio broadcast. skateboarding demonstrations, sausage sizzle, markets, camel riding, face painting and much more.

8am - Markets begin

8.30am - Mini fun Triathlon, bush poetry, chalk art

9.45am - One Voice Choir

10am - Citizen awards presentations co- hosted by Australia Day Ambassador Janelle Bloom and Richmond Valley Council

11.30am - Gary Fogarty and other bush poets

12pm - Luke Vassella, Gary Fogarty and many more great entertainers. Egg and spoon and sack races, beach touch footy and volleyball.

Lunch - Janelle Bloom's barbecue cook off.
