TORRENTIAL rain did not dampen the spirits of a future Tweed netball star Matilda "Tilly" Daniels when she met all-time netball legend Liz Ellis and Australian Diamonds/Queensland Firebirds player Chelsea Pitman on Sunday.

Tilly, 15, won the Telstra Super Skills competition which gave her the chance to meet Pitman and Ellis with 10 of her friends.

As part of a national search, netballers from around the country were urged to enter their most exciting, unique or game changing skill.

Nominated by her mother Sandy, winner Matilda caught the attention of judges with her rebound, snatch and pass skill.

Tilly currently plays for Hinterland District Netball Association but will move to Tweed Netball Association in 2013.

"The highlight of the day was meeting Liz and Chelsea; they made the session really fun," she said.

"Chelsea is one of my netball idols, so to be coached by her was just amazing.

"I learnt so much, especially about defending which isn't one of my strengths, so I think my game will definitely improve if I put some of the skills I learnt into practice."

Joined by the Telstra Netboys who cheered on the local netballers and provided some entertainment, Liz Ellis said she always enjoyed working with young players and seeing their passion for the game.

"The best thing about working with these young players is watching how much they progress throughout a session and the smile on their face when they master a skill," she said.

"The girls all had great attitudes and their basic ball skills were really good, so we were able to spend more time working on strategic plays.

"Tilly impressed me with her willingness to learn, solid ball skills and great leadership qualities.

"She's a complete young netballer.

The teen trains three to four times a week with aspirations to one day play Goal Attack for Australia.
