Roadside birth, trees down, power out and rescues aplenty

SES volunteers have had three tough days over the long weekend, with no sign of storm conditions easing for today.

Murwillumbah SES deputy controller Phil Davison said many volunteers have had up to two sleepless nights as they work around the clock to clear roads of debris and remove fallen trees from homes.

"There are a lot of trees down, with many hitting roofs," he told My Daily News.

A house has been crushed by a tree at Nunderi and a woman went into labor today at Burringbar.

A midwife went to her aid as road access to her home was cut due to a fallen tree.

"We're expecting conditions to continue today," Mr Davison said.

"But we have it pretty much under control."

Emergency services are responding to reports of a car in flood waters on Tweed Valley Way, just north of Condong, with police advising motorists to stay at home.

"If you don't need to travel, stay at home," a spokesperson for Tweed Byron LAC said.

Two people had to be rescued from flood waters near Murwillumbah this morning.

The Richmond/Tweed SES is also advising people not to drive, ride or walk in flood waters.

"Please take extreme caution on the roads and postpone any unnecessary travel," a spokesperson said.

"There have been eight flood rescues overnight."

There are also power outages at Kirra and through the Tweed shire.

Beaches along the Tweed Coast have been closed as gale force winds batter the coastline.
