THAT old super-competitive edge is back at the Roar.

The Brisbane outfit won a second consecutive game for the first time this season in its 2-1 triumph over the Wellington Phoenix on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Besart Berisha and Ben Halloran.

Speaking at yesterday's recovery session, captain Matt Smith said there were still areas his side needed to improve on.

"At times it wasn't pretty. There were times there where we had some very good moments and some very good passages of play," he said.

"We can certainly play better, but we did what we needed to do."

Smith did say he was impressed with the way his side was applying more pressure to teams across all areas of the park when they had possession, something that had improved under new coach Mike Mulvey.

"We're now trying to press and I think that's something that's been consistent with us over the last couple of years," he said.

Smith suffered an accidental blow to his back from goalkeeper Michael Theo, but said he would be fine for the Roar's next game against the Heart at AAMI Park on Sunday.

Phoenix's Leo Bertos and Alex Smith picked up facial injuries in the bruising encounter, but are expected to play against the Melbourne Victory on Saturday night.

Wellington will be forced to make one change for the game after Tyler Boyd, who celebrated his 18th birthday last week, was given a red card for his second bookable offence against the Roar and will be banned for one match.

His place in the squad will be taken by Cameron Lindsay.
