SES needs a new shed

IT'S State Emergency Service awareness week, and local SES volunteers want people to be just that ... aware.

Ballina's local unit controller Gerry Burnage, said everyone could be more aware of road conditions when driving - SES volunteers are called out to road accidents - and with the storm season approaching, they should be aware, making preparations to homes to help reduce the risk of damage in strong winds - such as cleaning out gutters and keeping yards clear of loose debris.

Mr Burnage said the community could also be aware that the Ballina SES unit has 60 volunteers - the most in its history - and they were now fundraising to build a new shed so training could be undertaken inside. Volunteers have to move equipment out of the shed so they can train inside.

The initial plan for the new headquarters, on Angels Beach Dr, was to build a mezzanine level on the existing shed. However, it has become necessary to build a new shed, at a cost of about $500,000.

The Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond made the SES the beneficiary of this year's Fine Food and Wine Festival, the Rotarians handing over $8250.

Rotarian Milton Colburt said SES volunteers were "unsung heroes" of the community.
