Showers and storms won’t dampen Christmas spirits

WITH Christmas and Boxing Days fast approaching and al fresco luncheons and dinners at stake, next week's Tweed weather conditions are becoming increasingly important to family chefs preparing for the traditional Christmas Day culinary onslaught.

Unfortunately, the news isn't very good with the bureau forecasting showers and even an afternoon storm or two to hit the Tweed over the next six days.

Although many holidaymakers will be looking for things to do, the events calendar is remarkably blank with just one main outdoor event planned for the next week.

However, the daily Christmas light ritual at Marilyn and David White Stokers Siding home will continue until January 3, 2013.

The 110.000 lights brightening up the White's gardens and home are switched on between 8pm and 10pm and have so far attracted around 700 visitors.

"We've raised about $1,400 so far and hope to beat last year's total of $1800.

"Although the weather may impact on the number of visitors, we will continue to light up the place and raise funds for Children's Leukaemia / Cancer Research Society," Mr White said.

If you're interested in having a look at the fantastic light show, visit Marilyn and David at 35 Summer Hill Close, Stokers Siding.

The main event this weekend will be brought to you by the Dbah Boardriders who are hosting their inaugural Triple Crown event at Duranbah Beach this Sunday, December 23.

The competition may have to deal with a shower or two but is an all weather event and take place regardless.

Event sponsor and participant Mick Fabris from the Coolangatta Sands Hotel said the event would go ahead rain, hail or shine and organisers had arranged marquees and covered stalls offering food and drinks as well as t-shirts.

The event aims to raise money for the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia and will see some of the world's best surfers compete.

"We're trying to raise enough money to buy a Sandcruiser Wheelchair which is suitable for use on the beach.

"The reason we organised the event for this day is that most professional surfers are arriving back in town.

"There's a whisper that Mick Fanning and newly crowned world champ Joel Parkinson will enter the competition," Mr Fabris said.

The event includes ironman and touch football competitions featuring teams from the Coolangatta Sands Hotel, Dolphins hotel and Rainbow Bay Surf Live Saving Club.

The event is free and will start at 8am.
