Singleton hopeful The Yowie will race to win in classic

MAGIC Millions part-owner John Singleton would love nothing more than to present himself with the trophy for winning this year's two-year-old classic to be run at the Gold Coast on January 12.

The flamboyant businessman tasted success in the race with Mirror Mirror in 2006, and has always maintained it was as high on his wish list as the Golden Slipper.

Singleton will find out tomorrow whether he has a contender for this year's $2 million edition when superbly-bred colt The Yowie makes his debut in the $80,000 Sportingbet Plate (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

Trained by David Hayes, the two-year-old is by super sire Redoute's Choice out of I Got Chills who showed blistering pace to win her first two starts in 2005 before going amiss.

She returned to the track 16 months later but was unable to recapture her two-year-old form and was retired.

The Yowie was a $450,000 purchase at this year Magic Millions sale, and is rated a $61 chance with Tattsbet to take this year's classic.

To gain a start, however, he would need to win tomorrow where he is rated a $4.50 second favourite behind the highly-rated Clevadude who has been installed at $1.65.

Trained by Rick Hore-Lacy, Clevadude created a big impression when he won by almost four lengths on debut at Cranbourne on December 15.

The effort catapulted the son of Bel Esprit - the sire of Black Caviar - into second favouritism for the Magic Millions behind unbeaten filly Assail.

Presently 35th on the order of entry, Clevadude would also have to win at Moonee Valley to earn a start on the Gold Coast.

The Sportingbet Plate also features two runners from the all-powerful Darley stable who will make their debuts.

Iberia is by boom English stallion New Approach, the sire of Boxing Day winner Montsegur, while Address is a son of Commands out of three-time city winner Amitola and could be better suited over something longer.
