Small businesses concerned about possible scam

THE Daily Examiner would like to hear from any business owner in the Clarence Valley who has recently been contacted by a representative claiming to be from 'The Health Inspector Kids Safety Guide'.

With fears the publication is a scam, a number of businesses have complained on an online forum after receiving a call which they say was misleading and implied the publication was endorsed by local hospital staff.

At least two have reported their concerns to www.scamwatch.gov.au.

Peter Mooney, manager of the publication now trading as Kids Activity and Safety Guide and located in Bundall Queensland, said he had 'no comment' and did not talk to reporters.

A second representative of the business, a manager going by the name of Jane (would not provide her surname) said the publication was legitimate and was currently offering 'sponsorship' opportunities to businesses in the Clarence Valley, but denied any knowledge of claims staff were implying a donation would be made to the children's ward.

She could not confirm how many copies would be supplied to Grafton Base Hospital.

"We work alongside the hospital and supply our magazine on a required basis," said Jane.

"We advise the businesses that this is a sponsorship opportunity and not for advertising.... money does not go to the hospital."

After repeated requests to the publication's managers, The Daily Examiner was not able to obtain a current ABN.

A spokeswoman from NSW Health said she was not aware of the publication and further investigations were required before a formal comment could be made.

A search of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) business name registry reveals THE HEALTH INSPECTOR KIDS SAFETY GUIDE was cancelled on May 5, 2009.
