Some Tweed roads already under with more rain to come

Blainey Woodham

THE Tweed is already facing road closures and landslips from the latest wet weather system to pass over the region but the worse is yet to come.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that expected heavy rain tomorrow and into the weekend was likely to cause moderate to major flooding of the Tweed River.

The Tweed has already received heavy falls this week that has reduced Tweed Valley Way down to one lane, with the following roads also cut off: Clothiers Creek, Round Mountain, Wooyung and Piggabeen.

There have also been landslips at Boltons Cutting and Upper Crystal Creek Rd.

Murwillumbah SES controller Chris Christostomos said the centre went into operation at about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

"We had to transport a few people by boat across Nobby Creek," Mr Christostomos said.

Mr Christostomos said there was another briefing from the BOM later today.

Tweed Shire Council planning and infrastructure engineer Danny Rose said heavy rain over the past few days, on top of the January floods, meant the catchment was full.

"With further heavy rain likely, now is the time to prepare," Mr Rose said.

"As many residents found out in January, if you wait for the water to rise and don't heed the warnings that are out there, it could be too late.

"Floods can peak in the middle of the night and by the morning there is little that can be done.

"Resilient communities have a good understanding of the risks they face in events like floods, and have plans in place to reduce their losses and recover from disasters more quickly."
