IT'S going to be a scorching week around the Tweed - but not quite a heat wave.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 30s on Wednesday.

Tweed Heads is expecting a maximum of 29 degrees today and 32 on Wednesday, while temperatures will push to the low 40s away from the coast.

Lismore, Ballina and Grafton are expecting maximums in the high 30s to low 40s on Wednesday, while Sydney-siders are expected to swelter in 43-degree heat today before a cooler change tonight.

Emergency services have been busy warning people of the dangers of a heat wave.

NSW Fire and Rescue has issued a total fire ban for the state with a very high fire danger issued for the Tweed.

The southern part of the state is on extreme to catastrophic fire danger.

NSW Police were reminding people of the dangers of leaving pets and children in parked cars.

NSW Ambulance recommends people avoid non-necessary activities and drink plenty of water.

My Daily News' Facebook pals provided some of their own advice to keep cool.

"If you do go out… sunscreen and light clothes. Keep the blinds closed and fans going and a/c on, and drink lots of water," Anita Goodwin said.

"Drape a wet cloth around your neck and refresh with cold water every so often. They use a fancier version of this for workers in the mines," Louanne King said.

Several Facebook users suggested heading to the shops to take advantage of their air conditioning.
