Storms bring extra rubbish for Clean-Up Australia Day

WITH Clean-Up Australia Day fast approaching, Cabarita residents will be helping to tidy up their local beaches this Saturday.

With storm damage having greatly affected the area, a lot more rubbish has been brought into the region and is in desperate need of a clean.

Organiser Suzi Bourke said that there is a noticeable amount of litter and vegetation along the beach.

"The storms have churned up lots of things from the bottom of the sea, in particular plastic and rope," Ms Bourke says.

"There are also lots of tree stumps, logs, branches and pebbles."

"Sunday is the national clean-up day. However, we hold our clean-up on the Saturday which has been running for four years now."

"People can register on the day, and we hope to have around 15 people, however, this depends on the weather."

"We start at 8am and finish at 11am with people coming for as long as they want."

"At 11am we finish with free drinks supplied by the Cabarita Sports Club and we often talk about things we found on the day."

"Last year we found a pair of RM Williams's boots."

In the future, the group hopes to rebuild and maintain the dunes.

"We will probably focus on dune restoration as well."

"We also plant pig face flowers which help keep the dunes together."

If you want to get involved the group is meeting at the Village Green in Pandanus Parade, Cabarita this Saturday March 2nd from 8am. For more information please visit cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/Cabarita+Beach.
