HE IS the 51kg Goonellabah boxer who isn't afraid to punch above his weight.

Jade Cook, 15 has been fighting for three years and is no stranger to taking on bigger opponents.

Three months ago, the Lismore High School student took on Binnaway Boxing Club member Albert Nolan and lost by split decision.

Nolan weighed in three kilograms over weight but Cook and coach Arthur Maloney decided to take the fight anyway.

"He could have pulled out and nine times out of 10 you'll lose to an opponent that's over the weight," Maloney said.

"But we travelled all the way to Moree and he was keen to fight."

Cook also stepped up a division to take on the Australian bantamweight champion in his age division earlier this year.

He shocked everyone when he rocked the champion and won the first round on points.

"Jade surprised a lot of people winning that first round," Maloney said.

"The other bloke came back blazing for the rest of the fight but you can tell Jade is a kid that wants to go all the way."

Cook had a rematch against Nolan at the weekend at the Broadmeadow PCYC and had a convincing win.

Points were close coming into the last round but Cook landed clean punches to claim his sixth win from 11 fights.

Cook is the grandson of former boxer Aubrey Roberts, who fought a 12-round draw against Israeli champion David Oved at Melbourne Festival Hall in 1961.

"I've had him (Jade) for three years and he's never missed a session," Maloney said.

"He's the first one there and the last one to leave.

"He is a counter puncher and a very smart boxer."

Cook and Maloney have plenty to look forward to with the South East Queensland Championships, Golden Gloves and Australian Championships next year.

They are also eyeing off the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in 2014.

"We'll take it one step at a time and he'll be 17 when the Commonwealth Games are on," Maloney said.

"We're looking at a couple of titles."
