Swimmers break records in race to help eradicate polio

CONSCIENTIOUS swimmers with the ambition to make it into the Guinness Book of Records will have the opportunity to see their names in the iconic publication if they sign up for the second Rotary Global Swimarathon.

Last year, the inaugural swimarathon managed to make it into the Guinness book as well as raise over $100,000 for the Rotary International End Polio Now campaign.

The event attracted 4546 participants who swam 100 metres between noon and 1.00 pm, making it into the Guinness Book of Records for the most swimmers completing 100 metres in the same hour.

Event chair Rotarian Roger Graves said the world could simply not stop until polio was finally eradicated from this earth.

"For this reason, we once again invite the entire world to take part in what we firmly believe will be the world's biggest ever one day swim," Mr Graves said.

Rotary hopes over 50,000 swimmers will join the event and more than $1 million will be raised for the cause.

Local organisers will choose the time of day and duration of their events and interested swimmers can find out more by visiting Rotary's website at rotaryglobalswimarathon.org.
