Teen pinned as tree falls on Nunderi house in storm

A LARGE tree fell onto a family home in Nunderi on Monday morning and residents were lucky to escape injury.

Warren Higgin's teenage son Jack got the fright of his life when a sizeable tree came crashing through the kitchen roof about 3.30am.

Jack was next to the kitchen sink when the tree came down as a result of gale force winds in the area.

Jack is deaf and was unable to comment, but his dad said that the teen was "white as a sheet" and visibly shaken by the incident.

"He didn't hear the tree come down and he got bolted to the wall when it happened," he said.

Mr Higgins said strong construction of the house prevented further damage and may have saved his son.

"We had to re-stump the house because all the old stumps were rusting out," he said.

"So we just re-stumped it (recently) and it took the weight in the corner, I don't know how it's done it. I always wanted to open the house up, but not this way."

Despite his own troubles, Mr Higgins was worried about the state of the rest of the Tweed.

"Yesterday I was in a bit of shock but today we're just getting on with it," he said.

"There's a lot of people who are still having a bit of a hard time of it."

A bulldozer and other heavy machinery arrived at the house this afternoon to remove the tree.
