TWEED Shire Women's Service is hosting the Wonders of Women (WOW) awards next Thursday to recognise the achievements and generosity of women in the shire.

The event is being held in conjunction with International International Women's Day and is promoting the self empowerment of women in the community.

WOW committee member Carol Graham said there were six outstanding nominations for the woman of the year category this year.

"Wonders Of Women was launched in 2008 to enhance the profile and achievements of women in the community," Ms Graham said.

"Wonders of women strives to recognise the work women do in our community.

"We've got nominations for all nine categories and a couple of categories got two nominations, including young woman of the year which is for women aged 13-18."

Ms Graham said the service helped women and children in crisis, and empowered women that have gone through trauma.

"We help women to stand on their own two feet again and be free from domestic violence.

"There are so many women in our community that give and help others, all women nominated are from the Tweed Valley shire."

The awards are being held Thursday, March 7, at the Kingscliff Bowls Club with tickets being sold at $15 a head.

For more information contact Carol on 02 6672 4188.

The nominees are:

Heather Martin, Trudy O'Dwyer, Dorothy Elliott, Cheva Weatherall, Jan Cronley, Sally Quinn, Penelope Meeves, Glenda Ashby, Dragon's Abreast Mt Warning, Kellie Young, Helen Mclean, Susie Dunn, Michelle Scott, Maggie-Anne Leybourne.
