Thieves smash into jewellery store with sledgehammer

A JEWELLERY store was targeted by a group of thieves, one wielding a sledgehammer.

The Elanora store was hit about 1.10am.

Police were on regular patrols when they saw a vehicle parked outside The Pines Shopping Centre.

"Police then observed four males, one carrying a sledgehammer, running towards the parked vehicle," a police statement said.

"They were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered.

"Police detained three of the males however the fourth fled on foot."

Jewellery had been stolen from the store after forced entry was gained.

A 19-year-old man from Biggera Waters and two 16-year-old boys from Kingston and Marsden were charged with a number of property offences committed in the South Eastern and Metropolitan South Regions in recent weeks.

The three were charged with three counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, three counts of enter premises, one count of attempted enter premises and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The 19-year-old will appear before Southport Magistrates Court today.

The two 16-year-olds will be dealt under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
