Thousands flock to Cudgen Bull and Bronc Spectacular

CUDGEN'S playing fields were invaded by bucking bovines and equally angry equines on Saturday when 4000 people attended the annual Cudgen Leagues Bull and Bronc Spectacular.

The event is the main fundraiser for Cudgen Leagues' associated clubs including junior and senior hockey, rugby league, cricket and the social bowls and golf clubs as well as the Cabarita Beach Pony Club and Horsemen's Association.

Organiser Judy Cartwright said about one hour before gates were meant to open, the crowd queuing outside the gates had grown so large, organisers decided to allow people to make their way to the seats surrounding the arena.

"Spectators really got involved and stayed glued to their seats till the very end," Ms Cartwright said.

Comedy clown Ian Bostock returned for another display of entertaining antics while bull fighting clowns Joel Chevalley and Kirsten Wood protected the cowboys and showed the bulls the exit gate.

Jack McArthur, 17 from Cooyar, near Kingaroy, took out the Junior and Open Bull ride double with Daniel Pigott coming second in the open competition and Damian Clarke coming third.

Jack McArthur said he drew a good bull in the junior competition and outrode the beast with ease.

"I had a Poll Bull with kicks and spins, a good little cowboy bull that gave me a bit of trouble but at the end I kept working and it gave me a win," Jack said of his open competition winning ride.

The Novice Bull Ride of the night was performed by PJ Bradford from Toowoomba with Jackson Felton coming in second place.

PJ said: "Good bulls that come out spinning make the ride a lot better and make for a better score.

"The crowd was good which always gets the night going and makes the ride a lot better," PJ said.

Cameron Taylor from Brighton took out the Saddle Bronc competition with Cody Kettleton second and Dean Ryan coming in third place.

Taylor, who breaks horses in for a living, is only in his second year as a saddle bronc rider but holds the 2010 QRA Bull Riding Title and the 2012 NRA Bull Riding Title.

Cameron said his bronc Oakey Rush "bucked around the arena and was a handful to ride".
