Time to get ahead of Christmas clutter and clear the home

Getting the house back in order can seem daunting, but there are simple steps you can take to make the task easier.

SO YOU spent the weeks before Christmas cleaning up and decluttering in preparation for visiting relatives?

And swore that you would never fall victim to all that stuff again?

Chances are that Christmas gifts, tired and dry Christmas trees, leftover packaging and the bounty of Boxing Day sales have already taken up some of the space you created.

The world's largest junk removal service, 1800-GOT-JUNK? has some tips for people caught in the thick of consumer madness and holiday bustle, who want to start 2013 clutter-free and stay that way.

Company director PR Tania Venn points out that bringing family together to clean and set aside one out-of-the-way room or alcove to stash clutter is a start, especially when time is short, so long as the stuff is not left to sit there.

She said that once the holiday festivities were over, it was time for a new year's resolution: to simplify and get organised.

"Remember the items you stashed neatly away before Christmas to make more room in your home?" asks Ms Venn.

"Well, now is the time to put a critical eye to all of those things, as well as any detritus remaining from the holiday celebrations and get to work on making those de-cluttering resolutions stick."

1800-GOT-JUNK? suggests the following tips for eco-friendly, post-holiday disposal:

  • Donate to a charitable organisation that can re-use your unwanted items/gifts.
  • Arrange to drop off electronics at an e-waste event.
  • Offer up items to a garage sale.
  • Donate cards, ribbons, and wrapping paper to an art teacher.
  • If you don't have time to sort through it all, call in a professional junk hauler to take it away for you and let them do the heavy lifting and recycling or donating to charity on your behalf.
