Touched by Ava's plight

HAPPIER TIMES: James Bancroft, his daughter Ava, 5, and wife Tegan in April this year before Ava developed a kidney disorder.

THE call to help the family of young Ava Bancroft through some tough times has crossed the nation, with funds raised from open mic nights in a Perth pub deposited into the Bancrofts' account last night.

Ava, 5, is the daughter of James Bancroft who grew up in Lawrence, and his partner Tegan.

Ava is suffering from a rare kidney condition, known as dense deposit disease, which has baffled doctors and devastated the family.

It is unclear whether a kidney transplant can help Ava, who has to endure two types of dialysis daily.

Touched by the tragedy, old workmates of Tegan from Western Australia - Jeihan Gilespie (a Brooms Head holidaymaker) and Kristy Klynsoon - decided to get some donation tins made up in honour of Princess Ava.

The tins were rattled with the help of musicians, MCs and pub staff at an open mic night at the Indian Ocean Hotel, Scarborough, in Perth.

"The thousand dollars was made pretty much from the locals' beer change in a few short hours," Ms Gilespie said. "The huge show of support was overwhelming and the congratulations from complete strangers just for trying to help out a friend felt undeserved."

Meanwhile the money being collected to raise funds for the Bancrofts at the upcoming Ava's Weekend on December 8-9 is looking impressive.

Donations include a signed Hilltop Hoods hoodie, a signed Kookaburras singlet, a Wallabies jersey signed by Will Genia and a signed Pink artwork.
