KOALA rescuers are in demand with the Friends of the Koala organisation taking 303 animals into care in the Northern Rivers region over the last year.

"We have an on-going need to train koala rescuers, carers, advocates, and educators," said President Lorraine Vass.

Friends of the Koala will be conducting a course on basic training on Saturday March 16.

Topics will include rescue techniques, basic koala assessment and handling, transportation, koala leaf collection, tree identification and the care of koalas in the Friends of the Koala Care Centre.

"Directly or indirectly, each and every one of us can do something to assist the survival of our precious koalas," Ms Vass said.

"Friends of the Koala is the perfect organisational framework for those people who want to help but are not sure how they can contribute."

The Koala Care Centre in Lismore provides an opportunity for people wanting to work directly with koalas to do so on a rostered, team basis.

"Caring does not have to be a 24 hour commitment and there is a wide range of other activities in which volunteers can become involved," care co-ordinator Pat Barnidge said.

Bookings for the Basic Training course are essential.
