BATTLING heat, an unfamiliar environment and strong competition, 13-year-old Tweed Heads/Coolangatta Club golfer Rebecca Kay triumphed at the recent South Australian Junior Amateur Championships.

Rebecca's outstanding result has catapulted her to eighth spot in the Australian junior rankings, a position she is bound to surpass as long as the motivation lasts.

However, a lack of motivation is certainly not an issue at the moment.

Rebecca said she practises every day for as long as possible.

"I started playing about four years ago and now play as much as possible every day," Rebecca said.

Clearly a proud father, Scott Kay said he daughter started playing full rounds of golf at a young age.

"Rebecca started playing 18 holes when she was just 10 years old," Mr Kay said.

Having recognised her talent Rebecca's school Palm Beach/Currumbin State High established a golf program especially for Rebecca.

Rebecca also practises at the Rachel Hetherington Driving Range at Piggabeen where golf legend Rachel Hetherington has been keeping an eye on the developing young star.

Rachel said she started playing when she was quite a bit older than Rebecca.

"I didn't start playing until I was 14.

"Rebecca has done remarkably well for such a young age.

"I really think that, where Rebecca's future is concerned, the sky is the limit.

Rachel's husband former cricket star Greg Ritchie, who runs the Piggabeen driving range with his wife, said most people hadn't recognised how talented Rebecca really was.

"We haven't had much to do with Rebecca's success so far but she has been practising here quite a bit.

"People don't realise how much talent she possesses and how special she really is," Mr Ritchie said.
